Text Box: SAFETY ADVISORY # 07-1
WELDING OF AXLES
Text Box: THIS IS THE FIRST OF A SERIES OF INFORMATIONAL SAFETY ADVISORIES TO BE POSTED, FROM TIME TO TIME, BOTH IN TRAINLINE AND ON THE TRAIN WEBSITE.

THESE ADVISORIES ARE SPONSORED BY BOTH THE ENGINEERING STANDARDS COMMITTEE (ESC) AND BY TRAIN.

One should review the website often as these postings will be more timely than in TrainLine as this publication is on a bimonthly basis.

Historically, the Association of American Railroads (AAR), in their field manuals has listed “Evidence of Welding” as a cause for renewal of axles. Welding anywhere on the circumferential surface of any axles was never done by “real railroads” for the reasons illustrated in the photos shown below.
Text Box: AXLE IN CROWN BRASS. THE LIGHT, SILVERY, COLORATION DENOTES THE AMOUNT OF METAL STILL ATTACHED TO THE REST OF THE AXLE.
Text Box: THIS DEPICTS THE AXLE IN THE DRIVING WHEEL CENTER CASTING. NOTE THE EXTENT OF THE OLD FRACTURING.
